He posted a 1. Why he's here: Bregman is coming off a forgettable season in which, perhaps more than any other fallen Astro, his on-field swagger appeared to wane amid the avalanche of derision that fell on Houston. The telltale metric was that Statcast credited Bregman with just five barrels on batted balls a season ago. As Bregman eases into his prime seasons, he'll look to return to hitting rockets, and if he does, he'll remind everyone why he was second in AL MVP voting during our last full season.
Why he's here: Bellinger is a naturally gifted fielder with a plus arm, elite speed and majestic power. When he gets the timing of his intricate load and swing right, he's one of the game's greatest players, as he showed through most of his MVP season in But sometimes, as was evident throughout the shortened season, his mechanics go awry, necessitating frequent maintenance. Bellinger was never quite in sync last year, batting.
Why he's here: Arenado played through shoulder pain AC joint for most of , which led to a career-worst. Many question whether his numbers will transfer outside of mile-high Denver, but the year-old claims he is "ripping" the ball with no issues this spring, and that's good news for the Cardinals.
Arenado's eight Gold Gloves will also bring an upgrade at the hot corner to an already talented defensive infield. Why he's here: This will be a crucial year for the two-time Gold Glove shortstop and four-time All-Star.
Smile" is coming off a down final season in Cleveland in which he hit a career-low. Now he will need to keep his contract negotiations from being a distraction as he dons a Mets uniform and takes center stage in New York.
Why he's here: Of all the players who struggled in , Yelich might have made the fewest excuses. He's now playing with a chip on his shoulder, and Brewers manager Craig Counsell is positive he'll return to form. Before posting a. Well, that one-season sample games, plate appearances included a. Why he's here: It's going to be almost impossible for Freeman to match the. He had more walks than strikeouts in , with career-best rates in both categories. Having fewer strikeouts leads to a higher average and OBP, and he didn't sacrifice any power in cutting down the K's.
With deGrom's velocity up this spring and an improved lineup around him, Mets fans can expect more deGrom dominance -- and more than likely some better run support -- in Why he's here: Baseball's best pitcher admitted to being affected by the stop-and-start nature of last year's pandemic-shortened season.
Cole still lived up to his ace billing, going with a 2. Why he's here: No, it's not foolish to compare Soto to Ted Williams. Williams hit. Soto hit. Granted, Soto did it in just 47 games and Williams then hit. If you're picking the player most likely to be the best hitter in the game in , it's Soto. Anderson 5 min read. I'm extremely interested to see what happens with their outfield heading to next year, but of course, all eyes are on free agent Freddie Freeman.
It'll be a fascinating offseason. Was that win season a fluke? Are they really going to be this good again in ? Will be fun to find out. They had a lot of older guys and "outta nowhere" big performances.
Is this the end for Dusty Baker? I'm worried it might be. The game is better with him in it. Red Sox. Quite a run, really. No one, not even their own front office, thought they'd get this far back in the spring. Who is getting traded this time? Just Tyler Glasnow? As long as they have three aces, they are contenders, but will Christian Yelich get back in his groove?
And now, one last ride with Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina. The offense ranked 10th in the AL in runs scored this season. That's just unacceptable and needs to be fixed.
Blue Jays. They probably need to bring back both Robbie Ray and Marcus Semien. Can they? White Sox. Surely they'll have better luck with injuries next year, right? The time to be aggressive in free agency is right now, Mariners. Gotta capitalize on last season. Losing Bob Melvin seems like a harbinger of a downturn in the organization.
We're furthermore not concerned with how these players will fare in seasons beyond the upcoming one. This is all about anticipated value in alone. Above all, remember that this is Internet Street, and only righteous grievances live here. Let us commence. Outraged by that upon which you have just lain jaundiced eyes? Sale's coming back from Tommy John surgery, and he hasn't pitched since , when his effectiveness was compromised by those elbow issues. Still, he's not that deep into his thirties, and he's not that far removed from a dominant run with Boston from We'll bet on the track record.
The Red Sox seem primed to play it conservatively with him in , which will mean something less than a full season's innings load. We'll still say Sale accrues enough value to justify top status.
It's hard to hold against Martinez for a number of obvious reasons. He's not far removed from an outstanding first two seasons in Boston from We'll fade him because of the major knee problems, but Alvarez has done nothing but display elite power and patience at the dish through his first 89 MLB games.
If he proves he can stay healthy, then he'll be much higher on the next edition of this list. Winker, 27, owns a slash line of. Pair that with his former standing as a top overall prospect, and Winker has a bright outlook for and beyond.
Lewis took home AL Rookie of the Year laurels last season, and that's not surprising given that he's a former 11th overall pick and top prospect. He's a center fielder with power and patience at the plate. Soroka is a bit of an unknown after tearing his Achilles last season, but the guess here is he comes close to a full season and gets back to keeping runs off the board thanks to his sinker-slider attack. Remember when it seemed like Brantley's career might be effectively over after the season because of injuries?
He's now churned out three straight highly productive seasons and stayed mostly healthy. Rizzo didn't hit up to his usual standards last season, but the overall body of work is much stronger. As well, there's no reason to think any kind of deep decline has set in given that he's in his early thirties. The Mets' thumper is 26 year of age, and he has 69 home runs through his first MLB games. His nickname? You see, he's named Pete, and he hits taters. Donaldson's 35, which is cause for a conservative ranking even in light of his resurgence since the start of the season.
That said, Donaldson figures to be a good source of power and capable defense at the hot corner for Minny. As noted, however, there are all sorts of reasons to be largely dismissive of struggles. Assuming he's healthy, he should find his true level again in
