When was ponds forge built

Ponds Forge in Sheffield will open next month after the city council agreed the extra funding. It had been due to stay closed until April after Sheffield City Trust deemed it too expensive to reopen. The facility, built for the World Student Games, is used by a number of swimmers and divers who have competed at Olympic games and other international events, as well as the general public. Last month, Sheffield City Trust, which runs Ponds Forge and a number of other leisure and entertainment venues in the city, said it planned to mothball the site along with the Sheffield Arena and City Hall.

That decision led a number of local groups to campaign against the move, with City of Sheffield Diving Club coach Tom Owens saying the closure would deprive aspiring athletes of the chance to "chase their dreams", while City of Sheffield Water Polo Club were forced to train outdoors.

Providing a facility for the citizens of Sheffield is of paramount importance for people's health and wellbeing and although it's costing money at the moment, if we stopped it would cost this city an awful lot more money in future years. Initially two workers were called onto the site after Christmas to reprofile water traps on the tubular steel. The diving pool is dominated by an impressive reinforced concrete high-diving board which is now complete following its repair after a bus hit it.

Barring anymore accidents, the centre will be ready for next year's games. Numerous world records have been set in the Sheffield pool since it was built nearly 20 years ago and it's considered to be one of the fastest facilities in the country.

Ponds Forge is regularly used for the biggest meets in the UK and we're fortunate to have it so close to Doncaster. Both Yorkshire and North East Championships are often held here along with pretty much every open meet that can be squeezed in. Ponds Forge is one of the most popular venues in European swimming, it offers: 50m x 25m 10 lanes Competition pool with moving booms catering for short course and long course competition Full Electronic timing and Score Board Extensive spectator gallery with room for 2, Cafe Licensed Bar on-site Car park with very limited space Diving pit to use as swim down facility Travelling Car Park and Directions Ponds Forge is one of the easiest pools to travel to.

It's situated a short walk from Sheffield station and immediately next door to the Transport Interchange Bus Station overlooking Park Square roundabout. There is an on-site car park but this fills very early. The entrance is somewhat concealed as it is an automated roller shutter door just past the left hand side of Travel Lodge. Details can be found here , but if unclear it may be prudent to discuss with one of the other parents attending.

A discount voucher can be obtained from the Ponds Forge reception during the meet to reduce the cost at the pay meter.
